Summer is nearing the end in Tokyo. Booming Higanbana, or Red Spider Lily tells the arrival of Autumn.
Higanbama is an ubiquitous autumn flower which usually begins blooming in the middle of September, around the equinoctial week called Higan or O-Higan. Higan is a time to visit family graves to pray for their ancestors.
I love this time of year. I can feel in the air what’s left of summer at the same time see the days grow shorter and darkness clearer. So nice to enjoy the seasonal transition from summer to autumn with lovely sceneries of Higanbana which Autumn has brought.
The noisy sounds of summer has disappeared and the breeze becomes nice and cool. I can also recognize that autumn is approaching by a sweet fragrance of Kinmokusei, or Sweet Olive. If you visit Tokyo in autumn, please remember to follow your nose to the sweet, gorgeous fragrance. Kinmokusei fragrance is unforgettable!
